So far all of my post have been about what I have seen with my own two eyes here at Jones Lake. Today I am going to depart from that practice and talk about what one of the rangers saw this morning. Understand that by having two lakes at our park we have plenty of species of dragonflies. To tell you the truth I really don't pay too much attention to them. Like butterflies, because there are so many of them, I tend to group them together and don't bother with trying to identify them when I do spot them. That may change after today. One of our rangers escorted a state wildlife biologist around the property today. What they found was amazing. For the first time since 1994 they not only spotted but caught a Belle's Sanddragon (Progomphus bellei)! Imagine that, 14 years have gone by without one being spotted! As if that weren't exciting enough, they may have found a new species of dragonfly, a darner!!! I will keep you updated when I find out more information. Since Ranger Garner helped find the possible new species, the joke around the office is that it should be named the Garner Darner. :) I think it has a nice ring to it!
